A hatchback coupe, the Nissan 180SX initially came into production from 1989. Every bit a Japanese model, this vehicle which was based on the Nissan S platform, derived its nomenclature on account of its 1.8 litre CA18 DET displacement engine. Mainly sold in Japan, this vehicle saw a tremendous wave of popularity in other countries too. In fact, the European model of the 180SX, also called the 200SX, was actually supposed to be a variant of the S110 Silvia.
Although in general, it resembles the Nissan Silvia to a great extent, the 180 SX has managed to hold out on its own merit, and differs from the former model in certain features like the pop-up headlights or the fastback roof. The second generation vehicles also witnessed a new 2.0 litre engine that came in a naturally aspirated SR20DE version as well as a turbo-powered SR20DET form. When combined with a manual or automatic gear box system, the turbocharged vehicle gave an impressive output of 130kw at 6400rpm!
The year 1991 witnessed further change to the engine, and the 180SX was built with a more powerful 2.0 litre 4-cylinder SR20 engine, which when combined with the 5-speed gear assembly, gave a very receptive and gratifying performance car on the road.
